TITLE:  nothing pink

AUTHOR:  Mark Hardy

SUMMERY:  A young, homosexual, and Baptist teenage boy comes to terms with how his sexuality affects his religion in 1970's midwest.  In the midst of two church services a day, visiting the poor, and hiding his gay porn magazines, he finds love for the first time in a boy named Robert.

RATING: 8

REVIEW:

What appears to be a fluffy, trashy, fruity young adult novel turns out to be quite more than that.  It's a great commentary about the relationship between religion and sexuality - how they can coexist, how they can't, etc.  The time setting fits this theme extremely well, and the fact that it's in first person, which I usually find incredibly annoying, really fits well with the story as well.  It shows you his thoughts, but not obnoxiously.  It has a personal tone to it, but not in an annoying way.  It enables you to view what he's thinking as he goes through falling in love for the first time, dealing with his parents finding out about his sexuality, and coming to terms with God as He relates to that sexuality.

In terms of coming-of-age books, this is one that is easily relatable.  Our parents have disapproved of all of us at some point.  It portrays an important moment for every teenager: the point in time when you realize that your parents won't always be happy with you, and that's okay; you don't need to live a life of pleasing everyone, you need to please and be yourself, even if people aren't okay with that.  The main character has to learn that in order to be happy, he's going to have to sacrifice the pride his parents have in him.  He has to learn that being himself is never wrong, even if people tell him it is.

It's written by a young author as his debut novel, making it refreshing and authentic to teenage readers.  It's short and sweet, not drawing out the coming-of-age moment for ever like a longer novel might.  The main character and his problems are, regardless of his gender, painfully true and his thoughts on himself make your heart bleed.  Throughout the book, whenever he complained about how "gay" he looked, I wanted to hug him and convince him he was wrong.

All in all, the only nitpick I had is that the summery on the inside cover flap was sort of misleading, and let me to believe there would be more romance than there actually was.  Other than that, though, it's a wonderful and refreshing read for someone who is sick of literary brilliance and pretension.  I was looking for something that had quality, but was fluffier and easier to read than the English books I had been reading, and that's what I got.  I recommend it to anyone who's looking for a fun, quick read.

MTV Europe

Okay, call me mean, but I'm pissed.  The Jonas Brothers are nominated for Best Group in the EMA's.  Obviously (hopefully) against Tokio Hotel.  I don't know, the Jonas Brothers are not only American, but I don't really see what's unique about their music.  Don't get me wrong, they're a guilty pleasure I am freely willing to admit to (my favorites are Kevin and Joe), but Tokio Hotel is unique and....EUROPEAN!

Real Life Steps In

How could touch-screen technology enhance the way you currently use your PC? How could it make things worse?

Okay...This sucks.  I hate life, I hate this age I am.  I try to make friends with people, but every guy I make friends with, I start to fall for.  And I don't want to.  Because I don't want to be hurt like I was this summer.  Each time I get a crush on someone, they get stronger.  The last one was the first time I'd ever felt jealous, the first time I listened to a love song and thought of a person instead of a pairing from some fandom, the first time I cried over a guy.  And I'm positive this time it will be worse.  One is, I think, still in love with someone else and the other has a girlfriend that he's crazy about.  I want to keep my heart safe, but I don't know how.  And besides, even if they were free, why the fuck would they like me?

I'm getting depressed again, and I don't want to be.  Because I put up walls hoping someone will care enough to notice and break them down and no one ever does.  *sigh*

Fans

Okay, you know what.  I've already devoted part of a post to this topic, but I have to vent for an even longer amount of space.

Fans.  Oh my God, get the fuck over yourselves!  Now, call me stupid, but most fans like parodies of movies and stuff right?  Well, just because it's an anti-fan that makes it, doesn't mean they were making it to insult you.  A lot of those offensive icons and comics and cartoons you see aren't made to be offensive.  They're made to be funny.  Even if it is an anti-fan who made it.  I mean, when an icon says "Twilight is the AIDS of literature", you can't automatically assume they mean it literally.  You could take it as the most offensive meaning possible, or you could take it as something it's a phenomonen that was around for a while that no one knew about that suddenly exploded.  It was probably meant to be funny.

And for that matter - and this goes for both sides - don't go looking for them if you know you will get offended!  Or if you know something you say will offend someone else.  Fans shouldn't go to anti-fan sites to bash them or their opinion.  Anti-fans shouldn't go to fansites to bash the thing they hate.  Why bother?   Why waste the energy when all that will happen is that everyone will get angry?  GOD!

And lastly, any fandom that takes itself so seriously that it can't take a joke ought not be taken seriously.  Because the best fandoms are the ones you can enjoy, laugh at, and not be blind to obvious faults.

I adore the Eragon series, but I know it's plot is a total rip off.  I OBSESS over Harry Potter, but I am readily willing to admit there are things that could have been better.  For Christ's sake, lighten up!

Cigerettes and Future Worries

Okay, both my parents smoke.  They smoke a lot.  Everyone in my family smokes.  I get tired of asking them, begging them, to quit.  I get tired of reminding them exactly why they should.  They just blow me off, telling me their health is fine.  WELL IT WON'T ALWAYS BE!  Sure, you'll only be the one in pain, unable to do the things you once were able to do.  But it's me and my sister that'll have to watch and know that there's nothing we can do.  It's us who will have to watch you die.  Come on, mom!  You watched Oma, how did you feel?  Huh?  I don't want to watch them deteriate like she did.  And I'm fucking crying!

The thing is, they don't want to expend the effort and added stress to try.  It's all about what will gratify them RIGHT NOW.  They don't think about how it will effect them later.  I do that, I think.  That's why I plan so well, I love plans and I think in the future.  They don't.  They don't care.  At all.  And they should.

But in the back of their mind, they know that what they are doing is unhealthy and dangerous.  They don't want to think of it that way, so they make excuses.  I don't want to disrupt the natural order.  My health is fine.  I've tried this or that and it didn't work.  I'll just be more mean and cranky if I do.  Everyone has their vices.  Not everyone dies from smoking.  ALL BULLSHIT!!!!  The truth is, with something as terrible as this, it's wrong even to hope for the best.  You have to assume the worst will happen and hope it happens quickly.

They think I hate them, but the truth is, I front fear and sadness with anger and hostility.  If they listened to my words, they would know.  I don't want them to die.

In other news, I'm terribly worried about school.  I'm a junior, so I'm taking the SAT and ACT tests this year.  My parents want me to take them in October to see where I'm at, but they're both within two weeks of each other and if fucking scares me.  What if I don't get into a good school?  I worry so much about my future that I begin to obsess and have panic attacks.  I could go into desperate detail, but I won't.

New Album Title!

Well, I'm obsessed with Tokio Hotel....and....THEIR NEW ALBUM TITLE HAS COME OUT!!  There album will come out on October 2, 2009, and the title will be the same world wide.  It is called "Humanoid".  Which is the same word in German and English, just pronounced differently.  Apparently, Bill wanted the title to be the same worldwide.  So, there it is!  They will be delving into sci-fi....MWAHAHAHA!

Also, for those who are interested, snippets of two English songs from the ablum have been leaked.  They were quickly taken off the internet, but you can listen on good ol' Youtube.  They are called "The Dark Side of the Sun" and "Pain of Love".  Both snippets make me want more really badly, and they are spectacular!

What do we think of this album title?  Someone, I don't remember who, said the songs were very "anthem-y" with a "darker edge".  I'm excited!

Oh, and by the way.  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was awesome, but I will post a journal later about the details...I'm feeling really lazy.

Poem and Home

Hey, poem and home rhyme.  I just realized that...CX

Anyway, this is a poem that I performed at GIV in front of the 59 other students plus numerous staff and guests.  I, personally, don't really like it at all.  It's far from my best poem, but in the little free time that I had, it was the best I could do.  Anyway, here it is.  Please be kind, even though it's not my best.

I want to have a say
I want to have a voice,
So I can help make a difference
I know I am powerful.

I want to unite
I want to work together
So we can make it better
I know people are powerful.

I want leaders to serve
I want the world to know
For me, for you, for us
I know peace is powerful.

I want education
I want to be informed
So we can learn from things like war
I know knowledge is powerful.

I want to get involved
I want to really act
So I can help change the world
I know empowerment is powerful.

I wrote this as my camp, Govenor's Institute for Current Issues and Youth Activism for a workshop called Forum Theater, where we chose an art form and made a final product that we presented on the last day to the rest of the camp.  I loved it.  And although I'm terribly sorry to be leaving the amazing friends I made there, I'm not sorry to be home at last.

I learned so much there, about myself and what I was passionate about, about the world around me, and about I could be a part of it.  One thing I'm extremely passionate about is human trafficking, especially as it relates to the U.S.A.  Human trafficking is, essentially, slavery.  And believe it or not, it's common in the U.S, especially Atlanta, Georgia, which is called the human trafficking capitol of America.  But I'm most concerned with the fact that in my state, there are no state laws against it, so police aren't trained to deal with it and my state is an easy target for these traffickers.  Work in your state to make sure that as much as possible is being done to stop modern day slavery.

---------------------------

On another, much happier note, the Harry Potter release in America is.......NEXT WEDNESDAY!!!  My favorite movie theater is having a midnight release party showing Tuesday into Wednesday and I'm going with two of my friends.  Sorry, had to say that.

Michael Jackson and Fangirl Annoyance

Okay, we all know by now that Michael Jackson is dead.  I like his music, even if I don't like him all that much, or his choices.  I think he creeped a lot of people out, but he did have a family and siblings and people who are going to miss him.  I'm sick of people saying online how glad they are that he's dead.  It's one thing to not really care, because there are a lot of people who I wouldn't care if they died, but to be happy?  That's wrong, that's a little much, don't you think?  He was a person, and while he may have been an uncomfirmed pedophile, he didn't do something so wrong to be happy he's dead!  He's not Hitler, for Christ's sake.  I wouldn't care nearly so much that he was dead if it wasn't for the fact that so many people were happy.

Speaking of extreme, inappropriate emotions, I'm getting sick of fans and anti-fans alike.  I mean, I have no problem with expressing your opinion.  I've done it myself, but the crazy fans and anti-fans are just out of control.  No one, fan or anti-fan, has a right to insult the series to the fans.  It's uncalled for.  If you don't like it, don't read fanfics or watch fanvids or look at fanart just so you can comment or review saying how terrible the fandom or the characters or the pairing is.  It's stupid!  Complain about it, insult it, by all means.  But do it with those who agree with you, not to people who are going to get insulted.

And the same goes for the fans.  If you know you won't be able to handle it, don't look at anti-fan art or fanvids, and don't go to anti-fan sites just so you can tell them how upset you are that they don't like your favorite book.  It's pathetic.  Just because you like it or don't like it, doesn't mean that you have the right to tell people how they should feel about it.  I'm an anti-fan of a few things, and yes, I go to sites to talk about why I dislike them, but I don't do it to the fans.  And I'm willing to admit that there are things that are worse.

My point is, just live and let live.  If you like something, that's fine.  Let other people dislike it, and don't take anything involved in the fandom or the anti-fan stuff too seriously.  They are just expressing an opinion.  The same goes for the anti-fans.  Just accept that other people really like whatever you dislike.  There is no reason for such epic arguments and fights online where you end up insulting people rather than the series.  Don't take yourself, your favorite things, or the fans or anti-fans too seriously.  It's pathetic.
